We've got a mission that can't be ignored: it's time to #ShutDownAttica. It's been nearly a half-century since the deadly attack on Attica on September 1971, leaving 43 lives lost and a dark mark on New York State's history. These lives were tragically taken under the orders of NYS Governor Nelson Rockefeller, carried out by NYS Troopers.

The appalling conditions that led to the uprising at Attica are now well-documented, revealing the brutal reality of the men's mistreatment and abuse. One survivor of Attica steps up to courageously share, "Incarcerated men in Attica were allowed to shower only once a week. The men were routinely beaten and tortured. They received an extremely small amount of powdered toothpaste once a month. A small bar of soap once a month. A roll of toilet tissue once a month. Extremely inadequate medical attention."

For months on end, the men in Attica pleaded for government intervention, but their requests remained ignored. Frustrated and left with no choice, they resorted to undesirable yet necessary steps to take over the prison. They weren't demanding freedom— they were fighting for their human rights to be acknowledged. They sought access to quality healthcare, the ability to take more than one shower per week, an end to the physical and verbal abuse inflicted by prison guards, fair labor treatment, improved food quality, and better sanitary conditions.

Together, we can once and for all Shut Down Attica!

Now, over 50 years later, the Attica Uprising serves as a devastating reminder of one of the worst periods in our state's past; unfortunately, not much has changed.

In 2003, Attica ranked as the second-highest in the nation for sexual misconduct and abuse, while a staggering 80% of the 2000 incarcerated individuals are people of color, yet only 10% of the staff share this demographic.

Today, we rise together to act on the mandate of closing this ugly chapter.

Our campaign to #ShutDownAttica is just starting, and we can't do it alone. We need your help to transform this vision into reality! Our team is working tirelessly, gearing up for major actions in 2023. In the meantime, we've kicked off our petition to "Shut Down Attica," and we're already collecting signatures. Signing the petition is a simple, impactful way to make a difference and show your support!

Together, we can once and for all Shut Down Attica!
